For a custom optical component, quality begins with a clear technical requirement. The finished part should be evaluated against the dimensions, optical performance, coating requirements and appearance criteria agreed for the project.
GIAI works from customer drawings and technical requirements. When a complete drawing is not available, its current website also states that customer samples can be evaluated to help determine relevant parameters and materials for customization.
An optical component cannot be evaluated correctly without knowing what it is expected to do. A machine-vision filter, laser optic, prism, optical window or imaging lens can require very different acceptance criteria.
For custom work, customers can provide drawings, dimensions, wavelength requirements, coating requirements, material information, application conditions and other relevant technical details.
GIAI’s current website states that customization can be based on a customer drawing. It also states that when a specific drawing is not available, supplied samples can be tested to help determine parameters and materials for the customized optical component.
GIAI’s published product information describes optical glass lens processing that can include material preparation, milling and grinding, precision grinding, polishing, rinsing, edging, coating, inspection and assembly. The same first-party material states that processing is inspected during transfer between stages.

For filters and other wavelength-selective coated components, visible appearance alone cannot determine whether the coating performs correctly. The component needs to be evaluated against the optical behavior specified for its application.
Relevant project requirements can include operating wavelength, transmission or reflection behavior, angle of incidence and other conditions defined for the optical system.
GIAI’s public website identifies metrology as part of its optical manufacturing capability. Its product pages also describe measurement and inspection as part of the manufacturing service.
An optical component must not only perform optically. Its dimensions and physical condition can also affect mounting, alignment, assembly and the usable optical area.
The dimensions that require inspection depend on the design. They can include diameter, length, width, thickness, edge geometry or other drawing-defined features.
Surface and appearance criteria should also be treated as specification-dependent. A value shown on one GIAI product page should not automatically be applied to every custom optic.
Final inspection should focus on the characteristics that determine whether the component is suitable for the intended optical system.
The acceptance criteria may be different for a filter, prism, lens, mirror or optical window. Final inspection should therefore return to the drawing and technical requirements rather than apply one generic tolerance to every part.
Quality control does not end with measurement. Finished optical surfaces and coatings need suitable protection through handling, packing and transport.
Legacy GIAI product pages describe vacuum electrostatic packaging followed by an outer box for those products. Packaging requirements can vary by component, so the appropriate packing method should be confirmed for the actual order.
The more clearly the important requirements are defined before manufacturing, the easier it is to align design, production, inspection and procurement around the same result.
Provide the component geometry, dimensions, thickness and relevant mechanical tolerances.
Explain what the component must transmit, reflect, focus, block, split or otherwise control.
Define the operating wavelength or spectral region relevant to the optical system.
Provide the required coating function and relevant operating conditions.
State the operating angle when optical performance depends on angle.
Define the surface or cosmetic criteria that are important to the component.
Describe the optical system and operating conditions that may influence design or acceptance.
Identify any specific inspection conditions that need to be agreed before production.
State whether the project concerns samples, development quantities or ongoing production.
A bandpass filter, prism, optical window, imaging lens and laser component can have very different critical characteristics. The inspection approach therefore needs to follow the actual drawing, optical function and agreed acceptance requirements.
Requirements such as flatness, wavefront performance, centration, clear aperture, surface quality, blocking performance or other specialized criteria should be defined and confirmed when they are relevant to the project.
